Ancestral Technologies/ On-the-Land
This session will focus on increasing your knowledge and understanding of our natural environment by engaging with the outdoors in the Kaska traditional territory of the Liard
First Nation. You will participate in ancestral technologies, hands-on Kaska heritage/cultural activities including traditional drum making, hand games, fishing, harvesting of local roots and meat, Kaska protocols, storytelling, language learning, and taking care of the land. Elders from Liard First Nation will join the group. Participants will spend one night camping outdoors with the group.
Learn archery! This session is open to all levels, including beginners. You will learn target shooting, 3D animal shooting. and the various competition formats of archery. Bring your own bow and equipment, if you have any. You will also learn coaching and this will be an opportunity for you to pass your Level 1 NCCP coaching certification, which allows you to coach archery back in your home community as a student job!
Learn the fundamentals of fine cooking in this hands-on culinary course. Chef McCauley, a professional chef-instructor, will teach you the secrets to creating impressive meals and preparing cuisine like a chef. Learn food safety fundamentals, culinary terms, proper knife handling, menu planning, and food presentation. Team up with fellow students to prepare scrumptious dishes. At the end of the week, take home a booklet of all the recipes you’ve prepared.
If you love to move and dance, then this is for you! Dance is an expression of movement through self. In this session, you will be provided professional training in different elements such as rhythm, technique, body awareness, strength, and balance, and, of course, it will be fun! You will explore different forms of dance including jazz, hip-hop, swing, salsa, and funk. Each day will begin with warm-up exercises and progress into choreographed movement in one or two of the above-mentioned styles. The afternoons will be spent on choreography for a “show piece” to be performed at the REM finale
. “Dance is the only art wherein we are the stuff of which it is make”.
5. Digital Fabrication
This hands-on session will teach you the basics of 3D printing, operation of computer controlled equipment, and 3D design. While exploring the world of digital fabrication you will learn how to create your own 3D model and then use the latest software and equipment to it from a computer model to a physical object that you can take home with you. This cutting edge session is brought to you by the team at YuKonstruct.
This is all about having fun and learning by doing! This session will stimulate your imagination and introduce you to the performing arts: mime, movement, storytelling, story theatre, improvisation, theatre sports, acting, stagecraft, music, dance, and play writing fundamentals. You will be mentored by a professional performing artist and learn about what it is like to “be in the business”.
7. Hair and Esthetics
Two industry experts will help you to gain hands-on salon experience while practicing on mannequins, and then on each other.
You will learn how to cut, style, and colour hair.
You will also learn basic aesthetic techniques including facials, manicures, and pedicures.
If you like, you will also get the opportunity to share your skills in the evening by giving manicures to your REM friends!
8. Healthy Student Athlete Development
This session is for students wanting to learn and benefit from modern strength and conditioning principles, including weight training techniques, agility, balance training, nutrition, energy system usage, substance misuse prevention, and their application towards a self-designed fitness program. If you enjoy working out and exercise, this is the course for you!
This session is for students who have no experience with horses, but are interested in equine related activities. You will be introduced to the world of horses, including: horse behaviour; safety while working with horses; horse history; breeds; life cycle; horse health care and first aid; riding and riding theory; careers in the equine industry; and much more!
10. Mini-Med School
Are you interested in helping others? Have you thought about a career in health care? Does how the body works and how health professionals help to keep you healthy interest you? Health Care Professionals work in many different settings. Come learn about a few of them with paramedics, nurses and doctors in a fun hands session.
11. Small Engines
This session will offer you a concentrated understanding of 2 and 4 stroke cycle engine principles and design, with a significant hands-on component that will allow you to develop practical, technical, and problem solving skills.
12. Wood Shop: Long boards
In this session you will build your very own longboard. All construction materials will be provided and you will be able to take your board home with you. Once you have completed the project, you will have a chance to test it out and record yourself riding your board. If you have already taken this course at a previous REM, please select another session.
